Ms. Downey, a social and marketing research consultant, is the owner of Downey Research Associates, a professional social and marketing research company based in Clark County. She also serves as an instructor of women's studies at the University of Nevada-Reno. She has been a member of the adjunct faculty at University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the Community College of Southern Nevada.

She holds an M.A. degree in sociology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The Downeys also own a home at 7761 High Chaparral St. in Las Vegas. They paid $450,000 for the property in Sept. 2005.
